Mold Worries Cause Concern at a Local School

Huntsville, Alabama -- Danielle Mitchell is a parent who volunteers every week to help the children here at Lynn Fanning Elementary, but recently she became concerned when a staff member handed her school ceiling tiles with mold all over them.

"I am concerned because I myself have been in the building quite a bit, and there is at times overwhelming smells of mold or mildew in certain areas around the school," Mitchell said.

She's not the only one complaining. When we went into this classroom, the teacher announced that just a few days ago, workers scraped mold off the ceiling, and the room smelled of mold so badly, it was hard to breathe. Kerry Wilkerson, operations manager for Madison County Schools, isn't denying these complaints.

"We came out here to do some air quality testing, some material testing," Wilkerson said. "We get some complaints sometimes where children and teachers are sick, and they might have a concern where it's mold or other environmental concerns."

That's why at Lynn Fanning Elementary, students and teachers saw a specialist testing the air for mold spores and the building for health-threatening mold problems. That relieves parents like Mitchell, with two children of her own here.
"Obviously, I'd like the air they're breathing to be clean and not cause them health problems later," Mitchell said.
For now, that's what's the school officials are promising. If these tests show a growing problem here, they say they'll do everything they can to take care of it.

Test results are scheduled to be back in a few weeks.
