Baby Dies in Hospital From Mould Infection
By Canada.com News
Canada -- It's too soon to say whether hospital renovations were a factor in the death of a premature infant who died of a mould infection in an intensive care unit, Ste-Justine Hospital said Tuesday. The neonatal unit where the baby died on Jan. 10 is being cleaned and sterilized, the hospital said in a statement. "Concerning the construction that's being done near the unit, the hospital's administration considers it's premature to link it to this event," the statement said. The hospital said the baby, born at 29 weeks, had an infectious mould disease but tests will determine the exact nature of the infection. "What happened concerns us greatly," Dr. Lucie Poitras, director of professional services, said in a statement. The cleaning and sterilization will last for several days and babies will be moved to another unit, the hospital said. The hospital was given $20 million by the Quebec government to enlarge the neonatal unit. Similar mould infection cases have been seen in recent years including the Royal Victoria Hospital in 2001, the Montreal Heart Institute in 2002 and the Honoré-Mercier Hospital in St. Hyacinthe in 2003
